Chapter Ten
Addison stumbled outside, bottle in hand, and headed for the barn. It took her a long time to climb to the loft, but she finally made it.
Dropping to her knees in front of the hay chute, she screamed until it felt like her head would explode. Then she laughed hysterically for a long time.
There was a carving on the wall. Sunny + Mack in a heart. He’d carved it there after the first time they kissed.
She drew her pistol and shot at it, missing completely. She tried again and hit the edges. Again and again until there was a hole the size of a person’s head in the side of the barn and she ran out of bullets.
She rolled to her stomach to pull fresh magazines from the back of her belt. It took a lot longer than usual in her state.
When she rolled over, Mack stood above her.
Clumsily, she tried to put the magazine in the pistol she held but couldn’t see clearly. Violence roiled in her blood.
He bent and took the gun from her with little effort and tossed it down the hay chute. The other was on the floor nearby and he tossed that one, too.
“Fucker. How dare you touch my guns!”
She got to her hands and knees to crawl toward the whiskey bottle. Mack got there first and threw it through the opening. The sound it made shattering seemed louder than possible.
“Big fuckin’ man on campus, huh, Mack?” She laughed. “I remember when you weren’t a badass, when you were just a scared kid, when I could have beaten you in a fight. None of that mattered to me. None of it. I loved you anyway, you selfish fuck!” Her head hurt. “I thought you loved me.”
“I did. I still do, Sunny.”
“Liar! You’re a goddamn liar. If you loved me, you wouldn’t have disappeared. If you loved me, you’d have at least let me know you were alright.”
She crawled to the barn wall, leaning against it as she glared at him. “It kills me to think of all the times I could have avoided bein’ so lonely I wanted to die. Meanwhile, you’re off havin’ a great time. I’m so fuckin’ tired and the only two men I ever gave a shit about are so selfish it makes me sick.”
Dragging her hands over her face, she yelled, “Well guess what? Fuck you both. I’m out of here. I’m done fightin’ for what no one else gives a damn about.”
There were tears on her face and she was dizzy. “I loved a boy once who meant everythin’ to me. He left when he didn’t have a choice. When he had a choice, he didn’t come back. A couple of years after Dad chose to climb in a bottle, I realized it was me. I wasn’t important to either of you.”
She shook her head. “All I want to do is crawl in my bed and sleep for a year. I fake it because I didn’t have any choices.
